Elementary and middle school awards program

The ICS early learner awards program recognizes students who show curiosity, creativity, problem solving ability, and a growing interest in computer science and technology.

ICS Emerging Learner Achievement Award

The ICS Emerging Learner Achievement Award is the primary Infinite Computer Science recognition program for elementary and middle school students. The program highlights early learners who demonstrate curiosity, creativity, persistence, and early promise in computer science or technology-related learning.

ICS recognizes that early interest in computer science can look different for every student. Some students may enjoy coding or robotics, while others may show strength in logic, digital creativity, problem solving, math, design, or independent exploration.

This program is intended to encourage students who are beginning to build confidence with technology and technical thinking. It focuses on growth, effort, and curiosity rather than expecting advanced experience at an early stage.

Program level Elementary and middle school students
Primary focus Curiosity, creativity, problem solving, and growth
Recognition type Award recognition with possible educational support

Purpose of the program

The program exists to recognize students who are developing an early interest in computer science and related skills. ICS places value on students who ask thoughtful questions, try new ideas, learn from mistakes, and show excitement about how technology works.

Recognition may consider classroom work, independent learning, small projects, creative technical activities, improvement over time, or a demonstrated interest in computing and problem solving.

Areas of consideration

ICS reviews early learner recognition through a broad set of development areas. A student does not need to demonstrate strength in every category to be considered.

  • Curiosity: Interest in how computers, software, websites, games, robots, or digital tools work.
  • Creativity: Use of technology, design, logic, or structured thinking to create something original or meaningful.
  • Problem solving: Willingness to think through challenges, try different approaches, and keep working toward a solution.
  • Growth: Clear improvement, consistent effort, or growing confidence in technical or academic skills.
  • Positive learning habits: Responsibility, kindness, patience, collaboration, and respect for the learning process.

Educational support

Select recognition cycles may include educational support, learning resources, or other forms of student recognition when available. Availability, eligibility standards, and timelines may vary by year.

ICS may consider both student achievement and educational opportunity when reviewing support options. Award recognition and educational support may be handled separately depending on the program cycle.

Eligibility

The elementary and middle school awards program is intended for students in elementary school, middle school, or an equivalent early education program. Students may be considered based on school activities, independent learning, creative projects, technical exploration, or other evidence of interest and growth.

Program values

ICS believes that early computer science learning should be encouraging, clear, and supportive. The program is designed to recognize students who are starting to develop confidence with technology and who show a willingness to keep learning.

Strong candidates often show curiosity, creativity, effort, and a positive approach to problem solving. The goal is to encourage early learners to continue exploring computer science in a healthy and meaningful way.

Program details, eligibility standards, recognition timelines, and support availability may be updated as ICS develops additional learning resources and award opportunities.
